Gardevoir-EX

Released in the 2016 Steam Siege expansion, this Gardevoir-EX was part of a set centered around the concept of dual-type Pokémon, a mechanic designed to reflect the clash between the mechanical forces of Team Gear and the natural resilience of the Kalos region. The card features Gardevoir in its fairy-type iteration, reflecting the typing shift introduced in the sixth generation of the franchise. It was designed to highlight the high-risk, high-reward gameplay characteristic of the EX-era, where powerful Pokémon offered significant advantages but rewarded opponents with two prize cards upon defeat.

The artwork for this specific card, rendered by illustrator Ryo Ueda, utilizes the dynamic, high-contrast holographic style prevalent in the XY-series. Ueda’s design leans into a clean, digital aesthetic that emphasizes the elegant, ethereal nature of Gardevoir while integrating the metallic, industrial motifs associated with the Steam Siege expansion. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile staple in competitive play, particularly valued for its ability to anchor Fairy-type decks through its specialized attacks and its aesthetic appeal to collectors of modern ultra-rare holographic cards.
