Where it came from
Great Tusk ex was released as part of the Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promos set, a collection of cards distributed outside of the main booster expansion cycles. This particular card was intended to highlight the introduction of the Paradox Pokémon, a central thematic element of the Generation IX video games. It features the ancient relative of Donphan, emphasizing the primal and formidable nature of these creatures within the lore of the Paldea region.
The artwork for this card showcases the distinct, rugged aesthetic typical of the Scarlet & Violet era, focusing on the imposing physical presence of Great Tusk in a battle-ready stance. Like other promo cards in this series, it was made available through specific retail merchandise, such as blister packs or collection boxes, rather than traditional randomized packs. It was well-received by players for its 'Giant Tusk' attack, which allowed for strategic disruption of the opponent's deck, making it a functional addition to many competitive Fighting-type builds.
