Provenance

Where it came from

The Hitmonchan 2/9 card was released as part of the Best of Game set in 2002. This collection was curated specifically for the North American market, serving as a compilation of some of the most powerful and popular cards from the early Base Set through the Neo series. It was designed to provide players with a standardized, high-performance deck experience during the later years of the original Wizards of the Coast era of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

The illustration features the classic Ken Sugimori artwork originally seen in the Base Set, capturing Hitmonchan in a dynamic, signature punching pose. While the set itself served as a bridge for competitive players transitioning between generations of the game, the cards are distinct for their unique 'Best of Game' gold-foil stamp. It was well-received by collectors for its status as a definitive reprint of a legacy card, marking a nostalgic closing chapter for the first generation of Pokémon card design.
