Where it came from
Released in the August 2015 Ancient Origins expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Hoopa-EX was designed to capitalize on the popularity of the Mythical Pokémon introduced in the sixth generation. The card, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, features the confined form of Hoopa, utilizing a striking holofoil finish that aligns with the aesthetic standards for ultra-rare cards of that era. Its inclusion in the set was part of a broader thematic focus on ancient powers and legendary Pokémon, serving as a centerpiece for competitive players due to its ability to search for other EX Pokémon.
The design of Hoopa-EX was received positively by the competitive community, as its 'Scoundrel Ring' ability significantly increased the consistency of decks reliant on high-power EX cards. Mitsuhiro Arita’s illustration emphasizes the character's mysterious, portal-manipulating nature, maintaining the high artistic quality expected of his long-standing tenure with the franchise. As a Rare Holo EX, it remains a hallmark of the XY series, reflecting the shift toward powerful, game-defining mechanics in the mid-2010s Pokémon meta.
