Where it came from
Released in 2003, the Skyridge expansion marked the final set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Pokémon Trading Card Game before the license returned to Nintendo. This set was notable for its integration with the Nintendo Game Boy Advance e-Reader peripheral, which allowed players to scan dot-code strips on the cards to unlock unique content and mini-games. As the last major release from the original design team, Skyridge is frequently regarded by collectors as the swan song of the early era of the game, distinguished by its complex mechanical depth and distinct card formatting.
The Houndoom card, numbered 12/144, features artwork by artist Mitsuhiro Arita, one of the most prominent figures in the TCG's history. Arita’s illustration captures the creature in a dark, atmospheric setting that emphasizes its status as a Darkness-type Pokémon. Within the competitive landscape of the time, the card was appreciated for its aesthetic design and its contribution to the niche of Darkness-type synergy, fitting into the transition period where the TCG's artistic direction began moving toward more polished and stylized digital techniques.
