Where it came from
The Houndour card (59/109) was released in the Team Rocket Returns expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which debuted in North America in late 2004. This set marked a return to the thematic focus on Team Rocket, the villainous organization from the original series, introducing mechanics like Pokémon-ex and Dark Pokémon to emphasize a shift toward competitive play and darker, more tactical aesthetics.
The artwork for this card was created by Midori Harada, a prolific illustrator for the franchise known for her clean, expressive style. In this depiction, Houndour is portrayed in a dynamic, slightly ominous stance that aligns with the set's intent to highlight the more aggressive, 'Dark' variants of Pokémon utilized by Team Rocket members. The design was well-received by players for its consistency within the series and its functional role as a solid common-tier card for fire-type strategies.
