Where it came from
Iron Thorns (098/215) was released as part of the Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promos set, a series of promotional cards distributed outside of standard expansion booster packs. This specific card was introduced to players in 2024, serving as a tie-in to the broader Paradox Pokémon theme introduced in the Generation IX video games, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The card features a futuristic, mechanical interpretation of the Pokémon Tyranitar, designed by the Creatures Inc. art team to emphasize its status as a Future Paradox Pokémon.
The design of Iron Thorns leans heavily into the clean, metallic aesthetic associated with the Future Paradox forms, utilizing sharp lines and a color palette of neon green and chrome. As a promo card, it was distributed through specialized channels, such as the Pokémon Trading Card Game Live client or physical retailer-specific blister packs, allowing collectors to obtain a distinct variant outside of the main set releases. It has been well-regarded by the community for its aggressive playability and its unique holographic foiling, which distinguishes it from its standard-set counterparts.
