Provenance

Where it came from

The Ivysaur card (35/112) was released in 2004 as part of the EX FireRed & LeafGreen expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was designed to coincide with the release of the eponymous video games for the Game Boy Advance, which were remakes of the original Red and Green versions. The card, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, features the iconic Grass-type Pokémon in a dynamic, naturalistic pose that reflects the series' return to the Kanto region roots.

Mitsuhiro Arita has been a foundational artist for the Pokémon franchise since its inception in the late 1990s. For this specific set, Arita sought to balance the nostalgia of the original 1996 designs with a more modern, refined aesthetic that defined the EX series era. The card was well-received by players for its utility as an uncommon evolution stage, effectively bridging the gap between the starter Bulbasaur and the powerful Venusaur in the game's competitive meta.
