Provenance

Where it came from

The Kakuna card, numbered 36/112, was released in 2004 as part of the EX FireRed & LeafGreen expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was designed to coincide with the release of the eponymous Game Boy Advance titles, which were remakes of the original Red and Green games. By revisiting the Kanto region, the set sought to evoke nostalgia among veteran players while introducing modern game mechanics to a new generation of collectors.

The artwork for this particular card was illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, a seminal artist in the history of the Pokémon TCG. Arita’s illustration depicts Kakuna in a dark, textured environment that emphasizes its cocoon-like state and defensive nature. Within the competitive landscape of the time, the card served as a functional stage-one evolution, bridge-building between the humble Weedle and the formidable Beedrill, and it remains a modest but classic example of early 2000s card design.
