Provenance

Where it came from

Released in May 2003 as part of the Skyridge expansion, this card represents the final main-series set produced by Wizards of the Coast before Nintendo brought the Pokémon Trading Card Game operations in-house. Skyridge is celebrated by collectors for its integration with the Nintendo GameCube game Pokémon Colosseum, which allowed players to use an e-Reader accessory to scan cards and unlock in-game content, a feature that defined the technical ambition of the late e-Card series era.

The artwork for this Kabutops was created by illustrator Mitsuhiro Arita, whose distinctive, painterly style is a cornerstone of early Pokémon card history. Arita’s design captures the prehistoric, aquatic menace of the Pokémon through a dramatic, atmospheric lens, emphasizing its scythe-like claws. At the time of release, the set was noted for its lower print run compared to earlier expansions, which has contributed to the card's enduring status as a sought-after piece of Pokémon TCG history.
