Provenance

Where it came from

Released in May 2003 as part of the Skyridge expansion, the Kabutops card numbered 150/144 represents the final set produced by Wizards of the Coast before the Pokémon Trading Card Game license transitioned to The Pokémon Company. As a Crystal-type Pokémon, Kabutops was designed to highlight the unique 'Crystal Body' Poké-Body mechanic, which allowed the card to change its type based on the basic energy attached to it. This mechanical complexity was a signature of the late Wizards of the Coast era, aimed at providing high-level players with strategic versatility.

The artwork for this piece was crafted by Mitsuhiro Arita, one of the most prolific and recognized illustrators in the franchise's history. Arita utilized a distinct, crystalline aesthetic to differentiate the Crystal Pokémon from standard holofoil cards, creating a visual motif that remains highly sought after by collectors today. Because Skyridge was produced in more limited quantities than preceding sets, these secret-rare cards occupy a significant place in the history of the game, marking the conclusion of the Wizards of the Coast production period.
