Where it came from
Karen, a powerful Supporter card, was released as part of the XY Black Star Promos series in 2016. The card was originally intended to be distributed during the 2016 Pokémon World Championships event in San Francisco, specifically serving as a promotional item for participants and attendees. Its introduction was highly anticipated by the competitive community, as the card's effect allowed players to shuffle all Pokémon from both players' discard piles into their decks, providing a strategic counter to discard-heavy archetypes.
The card features artwork by Megumi Mizutani, a prolific illustrator known for her clean, expressive style within the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Mizutani’s design highlights Karen, the Elite Four member from the Johto region, maintaining the character's signature dark and enigmatic aesthetic. Upon its release, the card was received with great interest, particularly by players focused on the 'Night March' and 'Vespiquen' decks, as it served as a significant meta-game disruption tool that fundamentally shifted deck-building strategies during that period.
