Where it came from
Released in August 2015 as part of the Ancient Origins expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, M Ampharos-EX 88/98 represents the Mega Evolution mechanic introduced during the XY series. This card was designed to feature the Mega-Evolved form of Ampharos, a Pokémon originally introduced in the second generation, which gains a Dragon-type secondary typing in this powerful form. The illustration was handled by the artist 5ban Graphics, a collective frequently commissioned by The Pokémon Company to produce high-impact, 3D-rendered character art for the Mega Evolution series.
The card was received by the competitive community as a high-risk, high-reward option, utilizing the 'Brilliant Blast' attack which deals significant damage while inflicting paralysis at the cost of placing damage counters on itself. It belongs to the broader design philosophy of the era, which emphasized powerful EX and Mega EX cards that redefined the tempo of matches. As an Ultra Rare card, it stands as a hallmark of the XY-era aesthetic, focusing on the stylized, glossy finish characteristic of the mid-2010s card designs.
