Where it came from
Released in the 2003 EX Ruby & Sapphire expansion, the Mewtwo ex card marked the debut of the EX mechanic in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Following the transition from the Wizards of the Coast era to the Pokémon Company International, these cards were introduced to feature higher hit points and more powerful abilities, serving as a response to the game's evolving power creep. This specific card, numbered 101/109, represents an early iteration of these high-tier cards, characterized by its distinctive silver holographic border and the 'ex' suffix attached to the Pokémon's name.
The card features artwork by Hiromichi Sugiyama, who utilized a sleek, digital aesthetic intended to emphasize the artificial and powerful nature of the Legendary Pokémon. Mewtwo is depicted in a striking, aggressive pose consistent with the visual shift toward more dynamic, computer-generated illustrations seen throughout the Ruby & Sapphire generation. At the time of release, this card was highly sought after by competitive players for its utility in the meta and remains a cornerstone for collectors of the EX-era series due to its status as one of the first holographic ultra-rares of the new format.
