Where it came from
The Mewtwo ex card, numbered 157/128, was released as part of the 30th Anniversary celebration for the Pokémon franchise. This special set was designed to honor three decades of the Trading Card Game by revisiting iconic Pokémon with updated mechanical frameworks and a distinct, modern aesthetic. The card features a Futuristic Rare treatment, a visual style characterized by high-gloss finishes and holographic patterns intended to evoke a sense of advanced technology.
The design of this iteration draws heavily upon Mewtwo’s original portrayal as a powerful, genetically engineered psychic entity. Artists tasked with the 30th Anniversary set sought to harmonize classic character silhouettes with contemporary art styles, prioritizing a polished and sharp look that appeals to both nostalgic long-term fans and new collectors. Upon release, the set was received as a commemorative milestone, widely appreciated for its nod to the history of the franchise while showcasing the current technical capabilities of card production.
