Provenance

Where it came from

The Mimikyu ex (004/215) was released in 2023 as part of the Scarlet & Violet Black Star Promos series. It serves as a featured component of the Mimikyu ex Box, a specialty product designed to highlight the 'ex' mechanic introduced in the Scarlet & Violet era of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which emphasizes high-HP Pokémon with powerful abilities and attacks.

The card features artwork by illustrator Kouki Saitou, who has contributed extensively to the Pokémon TCG for many years. Saitou’s design focuses on the eerie yet endearing nature of Mimikyu, a Ghost/Fairy type Pokémon that disguises itself as Pikachu to gain affection. The card was well-received by players for its 'Energy Burst' attack, which scales damage based on the energy attached to both active Pokémon, making it a strategic inclusion in early Scarlet & Violet competitive play.
