Provenance

Where it came from

The Mr. Mime card was released in 1999 as part of the Jungle expansion, the second major set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Following the massive success of the Base Set, Jungle was designed to introduce a wider variety of Pokémon from the original Game Boy titles, featuring artwork that moved away from the standardized style of the initial releases to embrace more dynamic, painterly illustrations.

The artwork for this card was created by Ken Sugimori, the primary illustrator and art director for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori utilized his characteristic watercolor-inspired technique to capture the eccentric and barrier-focused nature of Mr. Mime, resulting in a design that became a quintessential example of the 1990s trading card aesthetic and remains a favorite among those who appreciate the early, formative era of the game.
