Provenance

Where it came from

The Rhyhorn card was released as part of the Jungle expansion in 1999, which served as the first major expansion to the Pokémon Trading Card Game following the original Base Set. Produced by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to broaden the scope of the game by introducing new Pokémon species that appeared in the second generation of video games, specifically focusing on the grass- and fire-themed creatures found in the Kanto region's Safari Zone.

The artwork for this card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, whose distinctive style defined the visual identity of the early Pokémon franchise. Sugimori aimed to provide a grounded, anatomical representation of the Pokémon that mirrored his original designs for the Game Boy titles. As a common card, it was widely distributed, becoming a foundational piece for players building fighting-type decks during the early competitive era of the game.
