Multi Technical Machine 01 was released in 2002 as part of the Expedition Base Set, the inaugural entry in the Pokémon Trading Card Game's e-Card series. This set marked a significant shift in design, incorporating a dot-code strip along the left side of each card that could be scanned by the Nintendo e-Reader peripheral to unlock mini-games, Pokédex entries, or animations.
