Pokémon Reversal

Pokémon Reversal was released in 2002 as part of the Expedition Base Set, the first expansion to introduce the e-Reader functionality to the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set marked a significant shift in design, featuring a new card layout that accommodated dot codes along the sides of the cards, which could be scanned using a Nintendo Game Boy Advance peripheral to unlock digital content, Pokédex entries, or mini-games.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Keiji Kinebuchi, who utilized a distinct, minimalist graphical style that became a hallmark of the Expedition era. By focusing on clean lines and a functional aesthetic, Kinebuchi aimed to integrate the card into the more technical, interface-heavy design language mandated by the e-Reader format. While the gameplay mechanic of forcing a swap of the opponent’s Active Pokémon remained a staple of competitive play, the card itself is primarily remembered by collectors today for its unique place in the experimental transition period of the franchise’s history.
