Provenance

Where it came from

Piers, the former dark-type Gym Leader of Spikemuth, made his debut in the 2019 video game Pokémon Sword and Shield. As a character defined by his punk-rock aesthetic and devotion to his younger sister, Marnie, he became a fan favorite for his grounded, non-Dynamax approach to battling. This specific card, released as part of the Astral Radiance Trainer Gallery subset in 2022, serves as a high-rarity illustration highlighting his signature brooding style within the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

The card's artwork was illustrated by Sanosuke Sakuma, who is known for a distinctively painterly and atmospheric style within the series. In this iteration, Sakuma captures Piers leaning against a brick wall with his guitar, emphasizing the urban, underground influence of the Spikemuth region. By placing the character alongside his partner Pokémon, Galarian Obstagoon, the design effectively captures the camaraderie and rebellious spirit of the Galar region’s rock star gym leader.
