Where it came from
Piers, a character-focused card from the Darkness Ablaze expansion released in 2020, represents the gym leader of Spikemuth from the Pokémon Sword and Shield video games. This card was designed as a Full Art trainer, a category of cards that emphasizes the artwork of the featured character across the entire face of the card, highlighting his role as both a gym leader and the lead singer of Team Yell’s support structure.
The illustration, credited to artist kirisAki, captures Piers’ signature gothic, punk-inspired aesthetic that contrasts with the more traditional designs seen in other gym leaders. Upon its release, the card was well-received by fans of the Galar region for its faithful translation of the character's moody, charismatic personality, becoming a sought-after piece for collectors focusing on trainer cards and iconic character art within the Sword and Shield series.
