The Pikachu star card from the Holon Phantoms expansion was released in 2006 as part of the EX series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. These 'Gold Star' cards were introduced to highlight exceptionally rare, shiny variations of Pokémon, characterized by artwork where the creature breaks the borders of the frame. This particular card was intended to capture the elusive nature of the shiny Pikachu, featuring the character in its distinct, darker coloration amidst a dynamic, swirling electric background.

The illustration was handled by Masakazu Fukuda, a prolific artist in the TCG whose work often emphasized the motion and elemental power of the subjects. The Holon Phantoms set itself explored the lore of the Delta Species, Pokémon modified by electromagnetic waves at the Holon Research Tower. While Gold Star cards were designed to be highly sought-after chase cards for collectors, the Pikachu variant remains particularly significant for its status as a mascot character rendered in the rare, aesthetic style exclusive to this short-lived sub-series.
