Where it came from
The Pikachu SM98 card was released as part of the Sun & Moon Black Star Promos set, a series of promotional cards distributed primarily through various Pokémon Trading Card Game merchandise, retail events, and localized partnerships. This specific card was issued in 2018 to coincide with the release of the 'Detective Pikachu' themed products and promotional campaigns, serving as a tie-in to the broader media push surrounding the character's expansion into live-action cinema.
The card features an illustration by Kouki Saitou, a long-time contributor to the Pokémon TCG whose style is characterized by clean lines and vibrant, expressive character poses. In this particular design, Saitou depicts Pikachu in a dynamic, ready-for-battle stance that emphasizes the character's signature electric typing. Upon its release, the card was well-received by collectors who favor the distinct visual style of the Sun & Moon era and the accessibility of the Black Star Promo line.
