Where it came from
The Pikachu-GX card, numbered SM232, was released in 2018 as part of the Sun & Moon Black Star Promos series. It was specifically designed to accompany the release of the Pikachu-GX & Eevee-GX Special Collection box, a commemorative set celebrating the popular Pokémon mascots. By this point in the Sun & Moon era, GX cards had become a cornerstone of the Trading Card Game, introducing powerful attacks and unique 'GX' mechanics that required players to strategically manage their board presence.
The card features artwork by 5ban Graphics, a creative collective frequently commissioned by The Pokémon Company to produce sleek, high-fidelity digital renderings for the game's collectible cards. The design team focused on emphasizing the electric nature of Pikachu, utilizing vibrant, high-contrast visual effects that became characteristic of the GX era. Upon its release, it was well-received by collectors who prioritized the iconic status of the character, particularly as it provided a more accessible way to obtain a GX-level Pikachu outside of the standard randomized booster packs.
