Poppy

The Poppy card, numbered 227/197, was released in 2023 as part of the Scarlet & Violet—Obsidian Flames expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. As a Special Illustration Rare, this card features a distinct aesthetic departure from standard set cards, utilizing a full-art treatment that emphasizes a more artistic, painterly style. The set itself was designed to showcase the Terastal phenomenon, a central mechanic in the Generation IX video games that alters a Pokémon's typing, though this specific card focuses on the character Poppy, an Elite Four member from the Paldea region.

The artwork was commissioned to capture the personality of Poppy, who is portrayed as a young but formidable trainer. Illustrators for these Special Illustration Rares are chosen by the Pokémon Company to provide a unique narrative snapshot of the character outside of traditional combat poses. Upon its release, the card was well-received by collectors who prioritize character-centric designs and the vibrant, high-quality foil textures that characterize the Scarlet & Violet era's top-tier rarities.
