Where it came from
The Charizard ex card (228/197) was released in 2023 as part of the Scarlet & Violet—Obsidian Flames expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set introduced the Tera Pokémon mechanic, where certain Pokémon gain a different Tera Type than their usual elemental typing. In this instance, Charizard is depicted with a Darkness Tera Type, reflecting the game's shift toward diverse mechanical applications for iconic creatures.
The card features an illustration by the artist AKIRA EGAWA, who is known for their highly detailed, dynamic, and textured art style. The Hyper Rare design highlights the crystalline Tera crown atop Charizard's head, contrasting the creature's classic form with the shimmering, geometric aesthetics of the Tera phenomenon. It was received by the collecting community as a centerpiece of the set, valued both for its aesthetic departure from traditional fire-type Charizard depictions and its status as a sought-after secret-rare pull.
