Where it came from
Professor Birch first appeared as a supporter card in the EX Emerald expansion, released in 2005. The set was centered on the Hoenn region, drawing inspiration from the Pokémon Emerald video game title, and served to introduce mechanics and characters associated with the game's setting. The card depicts the researcher from Littleroot Town, known for his somewhat absent-minded personality and his role in gifting starter Pokémon to new trainers.
The card's design features artwork by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s illustrations for the trading card game are celebrated for their clean, iconic style that maintains consistency with the source material's visual identity. As an uncommon trainer card, it provided players with a tactical draw effect, allowing them to flip a coin to determine the number of cards they could draw, which solidified its utility in the competitive meta of the mid-2000s.
