Where it came from
Wally's Training (85/106) was released as part of the Emerald expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which debuted in North America in early 2005. The set was designed to tie into the Game Boy Advance title Pokémon Emerald, featuring artwork that emphasizes the aesthetic and themes of the Hoenn region. This specific trainer card depicts the character Wally, a recurring rival in the series, capturing his transition from a fragile novice to a capable trainer.
The card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and art director for the Pokémon franchise. His design approach for this card focuses on character progression, using clean, illustrative lines to convey Wally's growth as a trainer. Upon its release, the Emerald set was well-received by the player base for its inclusion of various trainer cards that offered strategic utility in competitive play, solidifying the card's place as a functional and thematic staple for collectors of the era.
