Provenance

Where it came from

The Psychic Energy card from the Gym Heroes set was released in Japan in 1998 and internationally in 2000. It served as a functional component of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, designed to power Psychic-type Pokémon attacks. As part of the Gym Heroes expansion, which introduced the concept of Pokémon belonging to specific Gym Leaders, this card maintained the standard, clean aesthetic established by the Wizards of the Coast era to ensure consistency across the game.

The minimalist design of the card focuses on the iconic swirling psychic emblem, a motif central to the game's elemental identity. While the illustration is utilitarian, it reflects the deliberate graphic design choices made by the development team at Creatures Inc. and Wizards of the Coast to keep gameplay accessible and visually distinct. Upon its release, it was regarded as a fundamental staple for competitive decks utilizing popular Gym Leader Pokémon like Sabrina's Alakazam.
