Provenance

Where it came from

Released in the year 2000 as part of the Gym Heroes expansion, Rocket's Scyther represents a significant shift in the Pokémon Trading Card Game strategy. This set was the first to introduce cards themed around the gym leaders and the villains of the franchise, specifically focusing on the rogue agents of Team Rocket. The card highlights the antagonistic aesthetic of the series, pairing the fan-favorite Scyther with the dark, industrial branding of the organization.

The artwork for this specific card was crafted by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and illustrator for the Pokémon series. Sugimori opted for a dynamic, aggressive pose that emphasizes the creature's mantis-like blades, fitting the gritty, combat-oriented theme of the Team Rocket cards. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical utility and by collectors for its iconic holographic foil treatment, which remains a hallmark of the early Wizards of the Coast era.
