Where it came from
Pyroar, the Royal Pokémon, was introduced to the Pokémon Trading Card Game as part of the Forbidden Light expansion, which was released internationally in May 2018. This set drew its primary inspiration from the Japanese expansion Ultra Force, focusing on the mysterious Ultra Beasts and the lingering influence of the Legendary Pokémon Necrozma in the Alola region. As a Fire-type Pokémon, this specific iteration of Pyroar was designed to reflect its status as a majestic, lion-like creature, utilizing the holo-rare treatment to emphasize the fiery intensity of its mane.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Kouki Saitou, who has been a prolific contributor to the franchise for many years. Saitou’s approach frequently emphasizes the dynamic movement and personality of the Pokémon, framing Pyroar in a regal, confrontational stance that highlights its connection to its evolutionary line. Within the competitive landscape of the 2018 meta, the card was regarded as a thematic addition for collectors of the Forbidden Light set, appreciated for its bold character art and the distinctive foil aesthetic common to Rare Holo prints of that era.
