Puzzle of Time

Puzzle of Time was introduced as part of the XY—BREAKpoint expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which was released internationally in early 2016. The set focuses on the introduction of the BREAK Evolution mechanic, a feature that saw cards placed horizontally over existing Pokémon to boost their HP and grant new abilities. As an Item card, Puzzle of Time reflects the strategic design philosophy of the XY era, which emphasized powerful utility cards that could significantly alter the tempo of a competitive match.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Toyste Beach, who utilized a clean, digital aesthetic consistent with the modern era of the game. The card’s effect—allowing a player to look at the top three cards of their deck and potentially retrieve cards from their discard pile—made it a staple in competitive decks, particularly those relying on item-recycling loops.
