Rocket's Secret Experiment

Released in October 2000 as part of the Gym Challenge expansion, Rocket's Secret Experiment reflects the thematic focus of the late-era Wizards of the Coast Pokémon sets. This expansion centered on the gym leaders and team affiliations established in the anime, allowing players to incorporate cards explicitly linked to Team Rocket's narrative. The set was designed to balance competitive gameplay with an immersive aesthetic that mirrored the villainous group's secretive and disruptive operations within the Kanto region.

The card artwork was produced by Ken Sugimori, the primary illustrator for the Pokémon franchise and a foundational figure in its visual design. Sugimori utilized his signature minimalist, clean-lined style to depict a laboratory scene, emphasizing the experimental nature of Team Rocket's research. The card was well-received by players for its tactical ability to disrupt opponents by shuffling their hands, a common mechanical trope associated with the disruptive nature of Team Rocket cards during the Gym series.
