Provenance

Where it came from

The Sandslash card was released as part of the Fossil expansion, which debuted in Japan in 1996 and internationally in 1999. As the third installment in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, the set was designed to introduce the ancient and prehistoric-themed Pokémon featured in the original Game Boy titles, complementing the earlier Base Set and Jungle expansions.

The artwork for this card was provided by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer for the Pokémon franchise. His illustration captures the Ground-type Pokémon in a characteristic defensive stance, reflecting the design philosophy of the era, which favored clean, watercolor-style depictions that remained faithful to the original sprites and conceptual art used in the early games.
