Provenance

Where it came from

The Magmar card was released in 1999 as part of the Fossil expansion, the third set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game produced by Wizards of the Coast. This set was designed to introduce Fossil-themed Pokémon and several new mechanics to the game, following the immense commercial success of the Base Set and Jungle expansions. The inclusion of Magmar served to fill the roster of Fire-type options available to players during the game's initial global expansion period.

The artwork for this card was created by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer for the Pokémon franchise. In keeping with his signature style, the illustration captures the creature in a dynamic, aggressive pose that emphasizes its elemental nature. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a staple uncommon fire attacker, valued for its ability to apply pressure in early-game match-ups, and it remains a recognizable piece of late-90s trading card history.
