Where it came from
The Scizor VMAX card, numbered 193/189, was released in the Darkness Ablaze expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game in 2020. This set marked a significant phase in the Sword & Shield series, introducing VMAX mechanics that emphasized Dynamax and Gigantamax forms from the Generation VIII video games. As a 'Secret Rare' variant with a distinctive rainbow-textured foil finish, this card highlights the armored Steel-type Pokémon Scizor in its expanded, powerful Gigantamax state, emphasizing its mechanical design and imposing silhouette.
The illustration was rendered by artist aky CG Works, a frequent contributor to the franchise known for clean, high-contrast digital renderings. The design objective for the VMAX cards of this era was to capture the grand scale of the creatures, often utilizing exaggerated perspectives to make the Pokémon appear monolithic against a simplified, shimmering background. The card was well-received by collectors for its aesthetic departure from standard full-art cards, providing a premium tactile experience through its deep-etched rainbow aesthetic.
