Provenance

Where it came from

The Tentacool card was released in 1999 as part of the Fossil expansion, the third set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was designed to introduce Generation I Pokémon that had not yet appeared in the Base Set or Jungle, expanding the strategic options for players by introducing new water-type mechanics and evolving creatures. The expansion was produced by Wizards of the Coast following the immense global success of the initial Pokémon releases, aiming to capitalize on the franchise's rapid cultural expansion from Japan to international markets.

The artwork for this card was created by Mitsuhiro Arita, a prolific illustrator whose work defined the visual identity of the early Pokémon TCG. Arita’s illustration captures the jellyfish-like essence of Tentacool in its natural aquatic environment, maintaining the consistent, clean aesthetic that characterized the Fossil set. Like other common-tier cards in the set, it was designed to be highly accessible to players while functioning as a reliable basic-stage water card, and it remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors of the original 151 Pokémon.
