Provenance

Where it came from

The Thundurus-EX card (38/116) was released in the 2013 Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion Plasma Freeze. This set was part of the Black & White series and focused on the Team Plasma narrative, characterized by unique card borders and thematic branding that tied the TCG gameplay to the antagonistic group from the video games. It was designed to highlight the legendary Pokémon's role within this mechanical ecosystem.

The illustration was rendered by Eske Yoshinob, who utilized a bold, high-contrast style typical of the EX series era. The artwork captures the imposing electrical nature of the Bolt Strike Pokémon, aiming to convey raw power consistent with the high-risk, high-reward nature of Pokémon-EX cards, which offered powerful abilities at the cost of surrendering two prize cards when knocked out.
