Where it came from
Thundurus-EX, designated as BW81, was released in 2013 as part of the Black & White Series Black Star Promos. This card was distributed to players as a promotional reward, specifically included in the Thundurus-EX Box, which served to bolster the competitive viability of Electric-type decks during the height of the Black & White competitive era. The card was designed to leverage the game's mechanics of the time, featuring high damage output and energy acceleration capabilities that were central to the 'Team Plasma' theme popular throughout the set's lifespan.
The illustration is credited to 5ban Graphics, a design studio frequently utilized by The Pokémon Company for the EX-era cards. Their approach typically favored a sleek, 3D-rendered aesthetic intended to give legendary Pokémon an imposing, cinematic presence on the tabletop. Within the community, this card was recognized for its strategic utility in tournament play, particularly for its ability to quickly power up attackers, which made it a staple for players navigating the shifting meta of the early 2010s.
