2 Lieder / 4 Villanelle

Released in 1961 as part of the Archiv Produktion series, this 7-inch EP showcases the polyphonic vocal mastery of Roland de Lassus. Archiv Produktion was established by Deutsche Grammophon to document Western classical music with historical rigor, emphasizing authentic performance practices and high-fidelity sound quality. This recording features the Singgemeinschaft Rudolf Lamy, an ensemble recognized for their precise, academic approach to Renaissance choral repertoire, reflecting the label's commitment to scholarly musicology.

The design of the sleeve adheres to the distinctive, austere visual identity of the Archiv series, which utilized monochromatic or restrained color palettes and precise typography to signal the label’s intellectual focus. This release was intended for an audience of collectors and musicologists seeking to explore early music during a period when the revival of Renaissance compositions was gaining institutional momentum. The production remains an example of the label's mid-century effort to preserve the nuanced textures of sixteenth-century secular vocal music.
