Provenance

Where it came from

Released under the Electrola label, this recording serves as a quintessential example of the mid-20th-century movement to revive Baroque music through modern chamber orchestras. The album features the Bath Festival Chamber Orchestra, led by the renowned violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin, whose interpretive approach sought to marry technical precision with the expressive warmth characteristic of the post-war classical tradition.

The collaboration with oboist Leon Goossens was a significant highlight of the sessions, given his legendary status in bringing the oboe to the forefront as a virtuosic solo instrument. The selection of concerti by Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel showcases the Bath Festival ensemble’s versatility and their commitment to highlighting the textural interplay between string and wind arrangements, a hallmark of the era's appreciation for Baroque masterworks.
