Ballade Nr. 2 F-dur Op. 38 / Barcarole Fis-dur Op. 60

Released in 1954 on the Deutsche Grammophon label, this 45 RPM extended play record features Hungarian pianist Julian von Karolyi performing two significant works by Frédéric Chopin. The recording captures von Karolyi during a period when he was actively recording for the German label, showcasing his refined approach to Romantic repertoire. The selection pairs the dramatic Ballade No. 2 in F major with the atmospheric Barcarolle in F-sharp major, reflecting the mid-century focus on high-fidelity captures of solo piano performances for the growing home audio market.

Deutsche Grammophon, established as a cornerstone of European classical recording, designed these early EP releases with a minimalist aesthetic that favored technical clarity and archival prestige. The sleeve art and production were intended to signal high-culture sophistication to postwar listeners. Julian von Karolyi, known for his technical precision and lyrical sensitivity, was a frequent collaborator with the label at this time, receiving consistent critical recognition for his ability to translate the complex emotional landscapes of Chopin's compositions into the constraints of the vinyl format.
