Where it came from
Released in 1981 by EMI, this split single represents a pivotal moment in Italian new wave and experimental pop. Franco Battiato’s 'Bandiera Bianca' served as the centerpiece, acting as a satirical commentary on the consumerist culture and political stagnation of early 1980s Italy. Its synthesis of classical motifs with electronic textures helped define Battiato’s transition into a mainstream intellectual icon.
The B-side, 'A Berlino... va bene', was contributed by Garbo, the stage name of Renato Abate. As a burgeoning figure in the Italian synth-pop scene, Garbo brought a stark, cold-wave aesthetic that complemented Battiato’s ironic distance. The pairing was a deliberate effort by EMI to bridge the gap between established avant-garde artistry and the burgeoning digital soundscapes gaining traction across Europe at the time.
