Lore

Why it matters

This 1952 Vox release represents an important early effort to bring Vivaldi’s choral works to a wider audience during the mid-century revival of his compositions. By pairing the Stuttgart forces with this specific Psalm setting, the recording highlights the composer's masterful use of orchestral color and antiphonal choral textures that defined his late Baroque style.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Beatus Vir, RV 597, is one of Vivaldi's most significant large-scale sacred choral works, composed during his tenure at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. While Vivaldi's instrumental concertos have long dominated his reputation, this oratorio-style setting of Psalm 111 demonstrates his mastery of choral polyphony and dramatic structural contrast, likely written to showcase the virtuosic capabilities of the musicians under his direction.

This 1952 release by VOX Records, catalog number PL 7140, represents an important moment in the mid-century Vivaldi revival. Featuring the Chamber Choir of the State Academy of Music in Stuttgart and the Pro Musica Orchestra, this recording reflects the era's emerging interest in historically informed performance styles, prioritizing clarity and the structural integrity of Baroque choral textures as the label sought to bring lesser-known ecclesiastical works to a wider domestic audience.
