Where it came from
Released in 1976 on the independent RIFF Records label, this collaborative album brought together British jazz vocalist Beryl Bryden and American tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman. The record emerged during a period when Freeman, a veteran of the Chicago jazz scene, was spending significant time touring Europe and engaging in cross-Atlantic collaborations with local musicians who shared his affinity for the traditional jazz and swing traditions.
The album serves as a documentation of their creative chemistry, capturing an intimate set of standards that highlights Bryden's blues-inflected vocals alongside Freeman's distinct, light-toned tenor saxophone style. It reflects the broader efforts of European labels like RIFF to preserve the improvisational spirit of mid-century jazz figures who remained active on the international circuit during the 1970s.
