Where it came from
Released in 1976 on the Vanguard label, 'Big-B-A-D-Band Live! At Buddy's Place' captures the vibrant energy of trumpeter and flugelhornist Clark Terry leading his ensemble at Buddy Rich’s renowned New York City jazz club. This recording serves as a definitive document of Terry's big band sound during the mid-seventies, a period when he was actively championing the large-ensemble format by blending sophisticated arrangements with the loose, improvisational spirit of a club performance.
The album showcases Terry's signature approach to big band jazz, which prioritized tight section work balanced against his own distinct, humorous, and virtuosic soloing. Produced during an era when jazz fusion was beginning to dominate the commercial landscape, this live record was well-received by traditionalists and jazz enthusiasts for its dedication to swing and blues-rooted foundations. It remains a hallmark of Terry’s discography, highlighting the seamless rapport between the bandleader and his musicians in the intimate, demanding setting of a live jazz venue.
