Where it came from
Released in 1971 on the Polydor label, this album represents a significant departure from Bill Cosby's established career as a stand-up comedian and television star. During this period, Cosby pursued a serious interest in jazz and funk music, assembling an ensemble of talented musicians to record a project that leaned heavily into experimental jazz-fusion and improvisational soundscapes.
The album features complex, lengthy arrangements that reflect the growing influence of the early 1970s jazz-funk movement. While it was produced during a time of creative experimentation for many mainstream artists, the record was met with mixed reviews from critics and confusion from fans expecting the humor associated with Cosby’s earlier comedy albums. Despite its commercial obscurity, the project is now regarded by record collectors as a curiosity of the era's avant-garde jazz scene.
