Where it came from
Released in 1972 on the Beacon label, Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys was a venture by Tony Morgan and the Mussel Power Band during a period of experimentation within the British pop and soul scene. The track represents the output of smaller, independent-leaning labels at the time that sought to capture the eclectic spirit of the era, often blending social commentary with infectious, radio-friendly arrangements that were typical of the early 1970s UK singles market.
The production sought to capitalize on the vibrant, groove-oriented sound that was gaining traction in European clubs, featuring a distinctive blend of soul-inflected vocals and rhythmic instrumentation. While the release remains a deep cut in the catalogs of the Beacon label, it reflects the broader design aesthetic of 1970s pop vinyl, characterized by straightforward, functional sleeve art and a focus on the immediacy of the A-side single format.
