Blues With Big Bill Broonzy · Sonny Terry · Brownie McGhee

Released in 2012 by the reissue label Doxy, this record serves as a compilation of work by three seminal figures in the American blues tradition: Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Terry, and Brownie McGhee. These artists were instrumental in the transition of blues from the rural South to the urban centers of the North during the mid-20th century. By the time these recordings were made, Broonzy had already established himself as a dominant force in Chicago blues, while the duo of Terry and McGhee had become ambassadors of the Piedmont blues style, helping to bridge the gap between folk revival audiences and traditional blues music.

The Doxy label is known for reissuing vintage jazz and blues recordings, often sourcing material from the public domain or early radio and session tapes. The design of this collection leans into the aesthetic of classic mid-century blues albums, utilizing minimalist photography and bold typography to evoke the gritty, authentic atmosphere of the original sessions. While not an original pressings of the artists' primary studio albums, this compilation was well-received by collectors looking for high-quality, accessible pressings of foundational blues tracks that define the transition from acoustic storytelling to the electrified sounds of the post-war era.
